With its glittering jaws, large eyes, fluffy appearance, and “smiley face” markings, Phidippus regius is well-loved even by arachnophobes. It spins a small silky hammock, which is only used as a home base. Instead of waiting in a web for prey, the regal jumping spider actively hunts its meals. It can take down invertebrates many times its own size and has even been known to catch small lizards and frogs.
