Like most other butterflies in family Nymphalidae, the “brush-footed butterflies”, the regal fritillary (Speyeria idalia) doesn’t walk with its tiny front legs but holds them close to its thorax, giving the appearance of having four limbs instead of six. Once common throughout the prairies of the United States, this species is rapidly disappearing as its habitats are fractured.
Measuring 1 3/8" tall, this double-posted soft enamel pin captures a the butterfly's iconic ventral pattern, which is drastically different than its dorsal view.
