Black soldier flies don’t sting or bite, but they mimic the size and coloration of organ pipe mud dauber wasps for defense. Their attractive blue or purple sheen, along with the fact that the harmless adults don't spread disease, is making them a favorite composter; the larvae are voracious and will even eat the larvae of pest flies.
