Nepenthes pitcher plants exhibit a dazzling variety of sizes and colors, even within the same species. Nepenthes sanguinea is especially noted for its bright pink, red, and yellow tones. Hybridization is also common in the wild, resulting in even more variations. Insects are irresistibly drawn to the pitchers by their colors and scents. Larger creatures, such as butterflies and pollinating bats, may be able to sip the pitcher’s sweet secretions without harm. Smaller invertebrates, like this ant, are unlikely to escape if they tumble into the pitcher’s mouth.
