This butterfly is found throughout the North American range of its host plant, the pawpaw tree (Asimina triloba). Its caterpillars are cannibals, so females lay eggs singly on pawpaw leaves. Larvae change colors as they molt, eventually developing striped bodies that are either mostly black or green. Like other swallowtail caterpillars, they display an osmeterium when threatened, which looks like an orange snake’s tongue and smells horrible.
This hard enamel, double posted pin measures 1.25 inches wide and depicts an ornery green morph of the larva. Comes on a Bug Box card with species name.
