Unlike mosquitoes, which only need blood meals for egg production, both male and female ticks drink blood to survive. When a tick contacts a warm-blooded host, it attaches itself with barbed mouthparts. Then, it salivates special proteins called evasins, which stop the bite from itching and allow it to go unnoticed as it digs deeper and feeds. Females engorge themselves, which is very attractive to males looking for mates.
